The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league composed of 30 teams in North America. It is considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, and one of the North American major professional sports leagues. The Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America,is awarded annually to the league champion at the end of each season.
The league was founded in 1917 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada with four teams, and through a series of expansions, contractions and relocations, the league is now composed of 30 teams, 24 of which are based in the United States and six in Canada. After a labour dispute that led to the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 season, the league has staged a successful comeback, including revenue and profit growth.
The NHL draws many highly skilled players from all over the world. Currently, the league has players from about 20 different countries.Canadians have historically constituted a large majority of the players in the NHL because both the sport and the league originated in Canada. In the past 25 years, the percentages of American and European players have increased because of the NHL's continued expansion into the United States, its high standard of play compared to other leagues, and the availability of highly skilled European players.
Hockey betting is becoming more popular each year. This is known as one of the sports where a smart bettor who practiced proper money management can make some really huge profits. Once a bettor begins to study and understand Hockey Odds, he or she can gain a better understanding of how the bookies set their numbers. The bookies set a lot of these Hockey Odds with the public in mind. They know the public is going to bet the Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers (and other public teams) every week so there are some great situations to get good numbers by going against teams like that.
It is always best to shop around when looking for the best Hockey Odds. Many different books release different numbers and Hockey Odds always tend to differ at each sportsbook. If you are truly interested in finding the best Hockey Odds, it is always best to have funded accounts at at least five sportsbooks. Hockey Odds can differ significantly at competing books.
A money line, used in baseball and hockey, takes the place of a point spread. Money line betting is simply wagering on the contest based on a given price rather than a point spread. The team wagered on has to win the game outright, regardless of the score. The minus sign (e.g.-130) always indicates the favorite and the amount you must bet to win $100. The plus sign (e.g.+120) always indicates the underdog and the amount you win for every $100 bet. Using this example, therefore, you would bet $130 to win $100 on the favorite, while for the underdog you would bet $100 to win $120.
The over/under is the number of points oddsmakers expect will be the total score for the contest (both teams combined, overtime included). You bet on whether the total points scored will be more or less than this number. As with point spread bets, you must generally wager $110 to win $100.
Betting on a point spread or money line is sometimes called betting "sides" - that is, betting that one side or the other will be the winner - while betting the over/under is referred to as betting "totals".
The 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs of the National Hockey League began on April 11, 2007. The sixteen teams that have qualified, eight from each conference, will play best-of-7 series for conference quarterfinals, semifinals and championships, and then the conference champions will play a best-of-7 series for the Stanley Cup. June 11 is the last possible date for the series to end. For the first time in NHL history, neither of the two teams that played in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals are in the playoffs.
After the 2006-07 NHL season, a total of 16 teams qualified for the playoffs. The Buffalo Sabres were the Eastern Conference regular season champions and were also the Presidents' Trophy winners with the best record at 113 points (53 wins, 22 regulation losses, 7 overtime losses), while the Detroit Red Wings earned the Western Conference regular season crown.
All NHL lines are posted the day of the scheduled event. You can bet on the 1 st Period or the full game. In both cases, you can choose a team to win or bet on the total score.
FOR EXAMPLE: Using the teams(Chicago and Los Angeles), should the game be tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, and then at the end of Overtime, the game will go to a shootout. If Los Angeles wins the shootout, the final score is 3-2, Los Angeles is the winner.
When betting on the total score of a game, you must take the OVER or the UNDER. Regardless of the outcome, the combined score of the two teams will determine if you win or lose your bet. Remember, overtime will always counttowards the bet. In the case of a shootout, the team winning the shootout will have an extra goal added to their total. Using the above example, thetotal score would be 5, and the OVER would be the winning bet.
IN THE EVENT OF A POSTPONED OR SUSPENDED GAME, ALL HOCKEY GAMES ARE CONSIDERED FINAL AFTER 55 MINUTES OF PLAY
